As the cool air blows in and the leaves turn crisp, we’re reminded that autumn is just around the corner. For many, this means attending various fall festivals with friends and family, such as Oktoberfest. And although, traditionally, the event was only a two-week long celebration held in Munich, #LakeArrowhead takes it a step further each year and allows visitors to experience the event every weekend for seven weeks. So, why jet to Germany when you can celebrate for free in Southern California?
Brief History of Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest began as a tradition in 1810 when the Munich townspeople were invited to publicly celebrate the marriage between Bavarian Prince Ludwig (later King Louis I) to Saxon Princess Therese. The original event was held in front of the palace’s gates in the party halls and lasted for five days, with the main event being a horse race.
Every year after, Munich held an anniversary celebration, which would transform over the years into what it is today. For example, carnival games were added several years after the first event, with beer halls being sponsored by local craft breweries shortly after.
Today, Munich’s 16-day celebration serves up 200,000 pounds of pork sausage, 480,000 spit-roasted chickens, and 1.5 million gallons of beer annually. Oktoberfest is widely regarded as a drinking holiday, but it also features other traditional activities such as wheelbarrow races, mush-eating contests, goose chases, and tree climbing.

Lake Arrowhead Oktoberfest 2022
The 41st Annual Lake Arrowhead Oktoberfest runs every Saturday and Sunday from September 17 until October 29, 2022. This year marks the first year the celebration is being held at Waterfront Park near Lake Arrowhead Village. Admission to the event is free, and the event is open to guests of all ages.
This year’s event is full of music, food, and fun for the entire family. Here’s what you can expect:
Music
There’s nothing like enjoying some traditional German music at Oktoberfest. This year’s bands include the Kalifornia Krauts, Bluebirds, and Bavarian Beer Garden Band. However, the stage is also home to other events such as dance parties, musical chairs, and food-eating contests.
Food
Whatever you do, remember to bring your appetite to the Lake Arrowhead Oktoberfest! Expect to find delicious traditional German foods like pretzels, German potatoes, coleslaw, knockwurst, bratwurst, sauerkraut, and more. Individual vendors sell the foods by the plate, and prices vary.
Drinks
No Oktoberfest is complete without a wide variety of beers and wines from which to choose. Just keep in mind that while entry to the event is free, drinking beer or wine requires you to purchase a “Starter Package.” This package includes a commemorative Oktoberfest 2022 mug and your first wine or beer for just $20. Drinks are $10 for a 6 oz. wine or 16 oz. beer. Perhaps the best part is that once you purchase the mug. It’s good for the entire event! So, you can use it weekend after weekend.
