Did you know that even if you live in Southern California, exciting snow-filled winter adventure awaits? All you need to do is drive to Lake Arrowhead. Whether you’re an expert snow boarder or an adept downhill skier, or even if you prefer tamer, low-impact winter activities such as inner-tubing, tobogganing and playing in the snow, snow-filled fun is just a short drive away.
While winter storms hit the east coast early in the season, Southern California snow begin in earnest later in the year, making December the perfect time to head safely up the hill. Local snow resort slopes, such as those at Snow Valley Mountain Resort, manufacture snow when conditions are dry. So, you can head up once your kids are off school for winter break, but before fog and blizzards conspire to create hazardous road conditions. During the 2016-2017 ski season, snowfall totaled 142 inches. So, if sunny SoCal dishes it out this season, can you take it? If so, rest assured the slopes will be groomed and ready for you and your family and friends. Start planning your winter trip today!
Downhill Skiing & Snowboarding
Southern Californians have a host of choices when it comes to ski resorts. But none are arguably as quaint and picturesque as the slopes at Snow Valley. Whether you plan to purchase a season pass, try night-skiing, or take snowboarding lessons, you haven’t skied So Cal until you’ve been to Snow Valley. The resort is currently gearing up for the 2017-2018 season. So, make sure you include a stint at the resort in your winter vacation plans.
For folks who aren’t quite ready to hit the slopes, Snow Valley offers a Snow Play area. This is a spot at the base of the mountain which is designated exclusively for snow play. Head there to enjoy a day in the snow without the hassle of heavy equipment or the necessity to navigate lifts. Snow Play is an option seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., whenever Snow Valley is open.
Another option for ski-free snow play Skypark at Santa’s Village. Open seven days a week throughout the holiday season, this is a North Pole-themed outdoor adventure park with attractions, restaurants and shops in a historic log cabin village. During the holiday season, the park is transformed into a winter wonderland of fun for the whole family!
Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing
Rim Nordic Ski Area is five miles east of Running Springs on Highway 18, across from Snow Valley Mountain Sports Park. At a base elevation of 6775′, the resort is the only cross country ski area in Southern California, offering both cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Rim Nordic features 12 miles of machine-groomed trails. Nordic offers beginner packages including equipment rental and lessons.
Inner-tubing & Tobogganing
Southern California’s largest and most established snow-tubing park is located near Lake Arrowhead, in the town of Running Springs. Snowdrift is recommended by Automobile Club of Southern California as a great place to play in the snow. Far safer than parking in a turnout, risking the safety of your family and friends, this seasonal park is the perfect place to bring a hot cocoa-filled thermos and a camera.
