According to a blogger on FrugalTravelGuy.com the VRBO and HomeAway websites explain their justification for the new service fee, none of which goes directly to the property owner. AirBnB charges a fee to guests as well as hosts.
Peace of Mind –
If you book a vacation property directly from the owner, you lose a valuable buffer between yourself and the owner. In many cases, this is a drag, since an impartial party won’t be involved to settle disputes. Who wants to spend their vacation arguing about key availability or properties that look better in the picture than they do in real life? Going through a property management company will protect you from surprises. And if something goes wrong while you are staying in the home, cabin or condo, the owner may not be immediately available to turn off alarms or arrange for emergency repairs.
If you book directly through a property owner, if your desired date is unavailable, you are out of luck.
