Each February 14, millions of Southern Californians search for the best spot to celebrate their love. Smart travelers head to the San Bernardino Mountain area of Lake Arrowhead. Located just 80 miles outside of the Greater Los Angeles basin and less than a two-hour drive from Orange County, the area’s scenery, fine dining, recreational activities and lodging opportunities make it the perfect haunt for a romantic getaway that won’t break the bank.
Whether you prefer a rustic, pet-friendly cabin or a lakeside luxury mansion, some of the available amenities invite you to curl up in front of a roaring wood-burning fireplace, take a dip in an inviting hot tub for two, or snuggle up on a cozy couch to enjoy a movie. By day, wherever you stay, Lake Arrowhead offers a welcome getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life below. Relax among the pines, breathe fresh air and take in the majestic views of the forest.
Declared by Orange Coast Magazine as the “Perfect Getaway,” Lake Arrowhead offers “a quiet alternative for a chilly retreat.” To help you prepare, we’ve assembled a few ideas for making the most of your Valentine’s Day holiday on the hill:
Outdoor Activities – Visitors can get back to nature, exploring the mountain with ATV trails Jeep tours, mountain bikes, fishing, hiking and geo-caching. Enjoy the Mountain is a tour company which gives access to areas of Lake Arrowhead that would be difficult for tourists to discover on their own. You’ll have to book with them in the warmer months. So, in the meantime, this Valentine’s Day season, book a boat tour on the Arrowhead Queen, check out skiing and boarding at Snow Valley or take your honey inner-tubing at Snowdrift.
Shopping – Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory offers you the opportunity to indulge the chocolate lover in your life, even if he or she prefers gift baskets, custom boxes or sugar free confections. And candy isn’t the only Valentine gift available in the area. Additional specialty shops and factory outlet stores in Lake Arrowhead Village offer serious shopping opportunities for couples on the hunt. Think Bass, Jockey, Van Heusen, Pendleton, Claire’s Boutique, Tervis, Coach and more!
Lake Arrowhead benefits from the designation as a tourist attraction, by attracting talented chefs and accomplished sommeliers to its fine dining establishments:
- The Grill at Antlers Inn – Features a full-service sushi bar, which is open each Wednesday through Saturday. The Grill also offers a full bar and expertly prepared dishes such as American and Italian style fish, steaks, chicken and four-star desserts.
- Stone Creek Bistro – In adjacent Blue Jay, this small spot belies the elegance of its menu and service, both of which are top-flight. Stone Creek features a seasonally-driven menu full of fresh produce, locally-sourced dairy and meat and homemade desserts. The bistro is known for an eclectic mix of regional American comfort food and traditional bistro cuisine.
- Hortensias Mexican Grill – Once a popular “hole in the wall,” which quickly grew into a hill-top favorite, this delicious restaurant is now located in the old Cliffhanger on Highway 18, offering world breathtaking views and tasty, traditional Mexican fare.
While Lake Arrowhead offers significantly less night-time entertainment than the big city below, there are a few fun things to do after dark:
The Tudor House – The Tudor House was once known as Club Arrowhead of the Pines, which was frequented by Los Angeles’ elite. Featuring a clubhouse, swimming pool and tennis court, the facility was owned by Arrowhead Villas, who loaned it out for certain community meetings such as the PTA. Bracken Fern Manor, across the street from the club, was part of Club Arrowhead of the Pines, and is said to have been owned by the legendary mobster, Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, who turned it into a gambling joint. Today, the Tudor House has been completely renovated and converted into a high-end restaurant and theater, boasting a theatrical stage with professional sound and lighting, where exciting theatrical and music events take place on a regular basis.
Blue Jay Cinema – With four screens, this theater is a great place to kick back and relax, while taking in the latest Hollywood entertainment. Since tickets are less than $12, movie night can be a simple, inexpensive way to spend quality time with the one you love.
