Spend Thanksgiving in Lake Arrowhead.

November is one of the best times of the year to explore the mountains around Lake Arrowhead. The leaves have changed color and the temperature dips. In fact, it’s one of the few places in Southern California where fall is in the air. If you are planning to take a short fall vacation, here are a few ideas for having fun in the Swiss Alps of So Cal — Lake Arrowhead.

Getting Outside

Visit the San Bernardino National Forest to learn more about hiking in the local conditions. Temperatures in November are typically pleasant, making longer hikes manageable, providing less chance of sunburn and providing an opportunity to see wildlife in their natural habitats. If you plan to hike, make sure you prepare for both unseasonably cool and warm weather, as snowfall can occur in as early as November and as late as May. At nearly 700,000 acres, the forest feels majestically uncrowded in the quieter months of fall. So escape the crowds in the valley below and head up where the air is clear. While you are in the mountains, stop at the Strawberry Peak Lookout, a functioning wildfire tower that offers great views and picture-taking opportunities of the area. Built in 1934, the tower’s has volunteers on hand to provide visitors with tips about fire prevention as well as the history of fire throughout the region.

Wildhaven Ranch is a wildlife sanctuary and visitor center that features endangered and indigenous wild animals. Operated by the San Bernardino Mountains Wildlife Society, Wildhaven Ranch is open on Saturday. If you are interested in seeing eagles, bears, and other creatures, reservations are recommended.
